Step 1: Prep the Work Area
Clear the area. Ensure safe access. Document conditions.
Before anything else, inspect the slope, check weather conditions, and secure the ladder and surrounding area. Use fall protection as needed.
Step 2: Loosen the Shingles Above
Use a flat pry bar or shingle snake to lift the overlapping shingles.
Start from above the damaged shingle. Gently break the seal and lift the adhesive strip, exposing the nails without tearing the surrounding materials.
Step 3: Remove the Damaged Shingle
Extract the nails. Slide the shingle out carefully.
Once the overlay is lifted, remove all 12 nails securing the damaged shingle, typically the four exposed nails and the eight fasteners in the course above, and confirm any variations based on local code or manufacturer specifications. Slide the shingle out horizontally, and avoid forcing it.
Step 4: Insert the Replacement Shingle
Align carefully. Match exposure and nailing patterns.
Insert the new shingle into place, trimming if necessary, and make sure it aligns with the original course lines and exposure. Nail it in the same position as the original. Replace any nails removed from adjoining shingles.
Step 5: Reseal & Final Check
Re-secure the overlying shingles. Re-seal as needed.
Apply a dab of roofing cement under each lifted tab for proper resealing. Press down firmly. Step back and visually confirm alignment and seal.
Pro Tips from the Field
- Always match shingle type, color, and size as closely as possible.
- Take extra care in cold weather as the temperature may impact the shingle's pliability.
- Carry extras—removing a shingle may damage those around it.
